When to Eat? The Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

Updated: May 25, 2020

Up until very recently—and by recently, I mean the modern era—it was very common for people/cultures to fast in order to cleanse their bodies of toxins and treat their diseases. We are seeing a rise in these methods once again as people are searching for different methods to help their bodies heal and thrive.

Some of the Benefits of Fasting

  1. Helps with Losing Weight —This does not just happen because of calorie restriction. It is very important to understand that fasting increases lipolysis (fat burning) in the body and changes the hormone levels to facilitate weight loss. By lowering insulin and increasing growth hormone levels, it also increases the release of norepinephrine, which is also a fat-burning hormone. Fasting is not “starving” as it actually can increase your metabolic rate.

  2. Slows down the Aging Process — Although aging cannot be stopped, changing the way our bodies work can change the way we age. Fasting activates a process called autophagy, which creates an environment for new healthy cells to grow, allowing us to rejuvenate our bodies.

  3. Supports Skin Health — Giving your body digestive rest helps it kickstart its detoxification mechanism. People report clear, glowing, healthy skin. The skin is a true reflection of our inner health, so when these changes are reported it can only mean good things are happening on the inside.

  4. Reduces Inflammation — We are seeing inflammation at the root of more and more disease processes, like that of arthritis and autoimmune diseases, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and dementia. Inflammation can also exacerbate other conditions you already have. People will often say “Wow, when my bowel flares up, I notice my eczema really acts up!" Fasting can reduce the free radicals present in the body and protect from inflammation. Depending on the fasting length and increased consumption of water, you can significantly reduce inflammatory issues.

  5. Improves Brain Health — Fasting reduces oxidative stress and inflammation, and that can have a positive impact on various brain functions. It can have a positive impact on mood, concentration, clarity, and focus. It can lower blood sugars and insulin resistance, which are being heavily investigated right now pertaining to their link with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

  6. Reduces Risk of Diabetes and Heart Disease — This is also based on the benefit intermittent fasting has on balancing blood sugar and insulin levels. Case studies are showing patients with type 2 diabetes reducing insulin intake, dramatically lowering insulin levels and improving insulin sensitivity. It is also showing a benefit in lowering blood pressure.

  7. Reduces Oxidative Stress — We all know that long-term oxidative stress eventually leads to the destruction of the body through free radicals. This is like a rust spot starting on the body of your car—what happens if you just ignore it over time? I think we all know the answer. Observational studies are showing a reduction in oxidative stress during intermittent fasting.

  8. Simple, Easy, and Cost-Saving — If you are busy, were never really a breakfast person, or are realizing that breakfast foods these days are just glorified processed desserts, then maybe intermittent fasting is for you.
